Members Are Customers Too- Enabling Collaboration within Associations

Enabling collaboration within associations helps to reengage members and enrich the membership experience.

Executives today are time-crunched and information-hungry. They need to solve problems or harness opportunities quickly, often looking to peers for insight. Professional associations are one place for those conversations, but many associations don’t do enough to enable member interaction.

As a member of numerous professional associations that have helped to keep me up to date with latest trends, best practices, research, and case studies, I’ve come to realize the format in which these organizations have communicated and engaged me has been fairly similar–and in many cases have not been nearly as engaging as possible in today’s socially enabled world.

By fusing existing online methods, such as a website and thought leadership, with an owned community construct, associations are experiencing record numbers of members who are reengaging by logging in and contributing. Additionally, instead of relying on push communications and traditional events, they are shifting to host an ongoing conversation with their membership. All of this creates considerable value for members by giving them access to a growing repository of members, conversations, content and shared knowledge that enriches an individual’s membership, while helping the organization to increase renewals.
